About Spirit Wings Kids Foundation

About Us

Welcome to the Spirit Wings Kid’s Charity. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to transforming and empowering children and their families through education, resources, referrals, role modeling for living a “life of contribution”, and financial assistance. We offer help in several different ways because, although money is sometimes necessary to help families through times of crisis, it usually only plays a small role. Arbonne’s President, Rita Davenport, has said, “If money can fix it, it’s not a problem”. It’s important to realize that life’s “real” problems are those that require much more than just financial assistance. “Real” problems require a focus on things like behavior and mindset, among others.

First and foremost, this charity would not be here without the support from our "founding contributors".  We'd like to thank the hundreds of generous contributors who have already given their support.  We've included our founding donors on the site, and we thank you!  Also, a special thanks to Dr. Shad Helmstetter, Chris Widener, and Mark Fournier, who donated their books/cd's to help us with our fundraising efforts.

You’ve all heard the saying, “If I knew then what I know now”? Wow! Wouldn’t it be great if we all had that hindsight? This website is here to help create awareness for you, and become a resource to learn from each other, as we brave family trials. Life is a journey, with periods of joy as well as adversity. We don’t get to choose the adversities in our lives, but we do get to choose our response to them. And rather than wishing they never occurred, we also get to choose whether or not we learn and grow from them.

Four years ago, my stepdaughter, Emily, was diagnosed with a life-threatening eating disorder. Costly treatment seemed to be her only hope for recovery. What our family discovered during this difficult time was that her treatment helped to a point, but was just a small part of her recovery. In fact, the defining piece to her recovery was learning to live in independence and contribution. When the mind shifts its focus to serving and caring for others with compassion and generosity, healing naturally occurs!

Whether you or your loved one’s needs are physical, behavioral, or both, wellness comes from a holistic approach. The issue or ailment must be looked at from various angles. Why not tap in to the resources we’ve provided here at our site and then share your thoughts and comments through our blogs? We’d love for you to ‘pay it forward’ and become part of our community!

Watch our site evolve and grow. We’ll also share meaningful information written by, and about, kids of all ages. Get insights about babies and toddlers with my daughter Nicole’s “Tot Spot”. “Wonder Kids” will feature a “guest kid author” that will share how kids are changing the world! Brace yourself for “Teen Scene”, where my twin daughters, Livi and Alex, will share stories about teens making a difference and present the “SWK Hero Award” to charities founded by teens, in order to help those organizations gain exposure and support. In addition, my son, Nathaniel, and his wife, Shyam, who run the non-profit permaculture community, Steward’s Draw, will help educate our families to ‘replace our footprint’ in their “Green Space” articles. My son Joe, the Director of Spirit Wings Charity, will monitor the blog chats, and process the requests for financial assistance. As you can see, this is truly a family affair and a labor of love!  Please enjoy our ‘Inaugural Edition’. Your feedback and contributions are greatly appreciated!
